PRATT PRO PODCAST POINTS

“It looks easy”. Even more, it looks cheap. “I can do that”.  Those are the podcasters who fail fast and quit early. It is not like building a volcano for science class or trying to grow your own Sea Monkeys. 

• If you start and quit things easily, do not try podcasting. If you are that person who buys a gym membership with your new year resolution, and then never use it past 2 weeks……….this is not for you.

• To be a pro, treat it as a business. A pro podcast needs a reasonable monthly budget for at least 6 months to 1 year.

• Surround yourself with experienced podcast pros. Your “Uncle Jed” who once “worked in radio” just isn’t going to cut it.

• Use a pro studio, and not just a curtained-off home studio from Radio Shack, a spare bedroom project, or a microphone and a laptop in a kitchen or conference room. You need pro techs for high-quality audio/video plus pro post editing and distribution.  If you have convinced yourself are doing a great job on your own and for cheap, you have already lost and don’t even know it.

• Do not ramble during your intros. Get to the point. A podcast typically loses audience interest every minute.

• Do not launch a vague podcast just because you want to do one. Choose a specific niche.

• Do not delay the start of your podcast waiting for the absolute perfect moment. You will never be 100% ready. The key is to start, but with pros surrounding you.

• Make the show for your audience, and not for yourself.

• Use trustworthy metrics to track growth. Most hosts highly exaggerate to soothe their own ego, or buy fake followers just as many do on social media.

• Manage expectations. Joe Rogan and others literally have millions of dollars backing them for staff, sales, distribution, and production. They may appear casual, but they are supported by a massive machine with enormous budgets. “Be You”.
