HERE COMES THE SON

My mom once told me that life changes when you finally love somebody more than you love yourself. It took me half of my life to understand what she meant.
Being young comes with being selfish. When we are young, we are focused on ourselves, our own lives, our own dreams, our own goals, and our own careers. If we succeed, we celebrate within ourselves. If we fail, we blame ourselves. Either way, when we are young, it is all about us. When we are young, the world revolves around ourselves.
On August 21st, 1993, what my mom told me was now quite clear.
My dad said, “One minute you don’t know them, and the next minute you would take a bullet for them”. He continued, “A father’s love never goes away. I still feel that same way about you. ”
Being blessed, this has happened four times, with the first being our oldest son, David. It changed my life. No more wrestling bears, walking on airplanes, cliff diving at Salt River, bungee jumping from arenas, or jumping from the stage crowd surfing. Nope. Couldn’t risk it, as my responsibility was to my family. I couldn’t wait to return home from my air shift or from public appearances just so my son could fall asleep on my chest. I pretty much stopped all travel just to be at home with him.
Since that day in August of 1993, I look at myself differently than most everybody. It is an honor when people recall my broadcast career or my entrepreneurial journey of building a network and marketing agency, but that is not how I identify with myself. In my heart, I am first and foremost a father.
