PRATT PRO PODCAST TIPS

INVERTED PYRAMID

Do not waste time with idle chit-chat to open your podcast. Get right to the good stuff. Your first line should be powerful. I call this strategy the “inverted pyramid” and have taught it to thousands, including at conferences, conventions, and college campuses. Simply start with your most important and engaging content. Hook them in 60 seconds or lose them forever.

No long intros. No sponsor reads before you’ve earned their attention. No rambling about your week. You’ve got one minute to earn their attention.

Podcast studies have shown that most podcast listeners will give a host one minute to determine if they wish to continue listening. That’s it!  We live in an attention-deficit world. Below is the basic audience percentage that a standard podcast begins with, along with the rate of audience loss.

Start 100% of the Audience

After 1 Minute 90%

After 2 Minutes 80%

After 3 minutes 60%

After 5 minutes 50% or Less
End 10% of the audience.

TITLE AND THUMBNAIL

Your title and thumbnail are not an afterthought. They’re the first, and often only, chance you get to prove you’re worth someone’s time. If your packaging looks like everyone else’s, you’ve already lost.

Above is provided an example from when I was promoting my audiobook podcast. My podcasts were also used on all social network platforms, mail campaigns, etc. to promote the podcast/audiobook. Your thumbnail should include an interesting title plus an image that hopefully encourages listenership and viewership.
